Kate Organising a Conference

In this module you will find a story about the tourism industry: read the dialogue between the characters and choose which is the correct way to behave in each situation!

Kate has to organise an international two-day conference for her company for approximately 80 participants. She wants to find a suitable hotel with a conference room, so as to be more convenient and relaxing for the international participants who will be staying at the hotel.

Seven of the registered participants are wheelchair users requiring an accessible guest room and one of them has also asked for an allergy-friendly accessible guest room.

Kate has selected 2 hotels, CENTRAL Hotel and PARK Hotel, which are both close to the city centre and suitable for hosting a conference. They each have 100 guest rooms. She decides to visit both hotels to check if they have the appropriate rooms for the specific participants and then choose the most suitable one.

She first visits CENTRAL Hotel and talks to the manager.

CENTRAL Hotel manager: We only have 5 accessible guest rooms, as required by the law. We fully comply with the law and we did not have any problems so far. Can you put the other two guests in another hotel nearby? I can ask if they have accessible rooms available. Regarding the allergy-friendly guest room, all our guest rooms, including the accessible ones have a very thin carpet flooring which is not a problem for the guests using a wheelchair.

We keep the carpet very clean and we provide non-allergenic bedding in all rooms, so I think it will work fine for this guest.

Kate: Sorry but this is not the best solution. We would like to have all the participants staying at the same hotel where the conference will be held. This is quite important and much more comfortable, especially for the participants who are using a wheelchair. Regarding the allergy-friendly room, I also consider the carpet as a problem. I am sure our guest would require a room with hard flooring. Sorry, but I have to look for another hotel for our conference.

PARK hotel manager: We have 10 accessible rooms, all with hard flooring. All our rooms are non-smoking and non-allergenic bedding is offered in all rooms. Air conditioning can be adjusted according to the guest preferences in all rooms. The conference room floor is tiled. I hope that your guests will be happy to stay with us.

Kate: This seems quite satisfactory. Can you show me please the guestrooms and the conference room?

Kate finds PARK hotel suitable for the conference and she books the conference at PARK Hotel.

What policy should the hotels have followed regarding accessibility ?
